Description

A dark passageway between buildings leads to steps and a gateway to a street at higher level. At the end of the walkway is a tenement building with a curved wall incorporating arched windows. To the right of the path stands a small old stone house with tiled roof and chimneys.

This is a photograph from the book 'Origin, nomenclature and location of various houses and streets in Edinburgh'. Broughton was originally a separate village to the north of Edinburgh. It became absorbed into the city during Edinburgh's northward expansion in the 18th and 19th centuries.
