Description
A house with a group of children sitting and playing on the stone stairs which lead to the first floor entrance. A woman is hanging out her washing from the top floor of a nearby tenement block and appears to be talking to a woman on the ground who is wearing a hat and coat. There is a street light attached to the side of the house and a railed entrance to another property can be seen at the opposite side.

This is a photograph from the book 'Origin, nomenclature and location of various houses and streets in Edinburgh'. - " To be let a house in Chessels Buildings head of the Canongate, neatly furnished, and fit to accommodate a genteel family" Edinburgh Evening Courant Feb 18th 1767.
Chessel's Court is situated just off the Canongate in Edinburgh. It was built in 1745 and substantially renovated in the 1950's and 1960's.
