This is a photograph from the book 'Origin, nomenclature and location of various houses and streets in Edinburgh'. Waverley Place, like other place names monikered "Waverley" is named after Sir Walter Scott's novel of the same name. Croft an righ is widely believed to mean croft of the King, but is more likely derived from Croftangry, a term dating from 1497 and meaning a fenced grazing area within a croft. The corrupted spelling has appeared only since the early 1800's.
