Description

The scene shows a row of old houses with higher tenement buildings behind. The stone houses have tiled roofs and tall chimney stacks. There are a couple of shop fronts along the street and garments can be seen displayed from a doorway. The end house has a "Butcher" sign and is in a state of disrepair with posters pasted onto its walls. In the distance a person is walking down the street.

This is a photograph from the book 'Origin, nomenclature and location of various houses and streets in Edinburgh'. The Pleasance is a street in Edinburgh. It runs south from the east end of the Cowgate for roughly 1/2 a mile where it becomes St Leonard's Street. The street is home to one of the key venues in the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
