Description
A salesman and his donkey are partly obscured as children congregate outside his premises. The man's goods are on display including chairs, garments and a piano organ which is covered in material. The boys in the centre of the picture are barefoot.

This is a photograph from 'The Life History of a Slum Child' focusing on the community living in the Canongate. The Canongate is the section of Edinburgh's Royal Mile running from the junction with Jeffrey Street to a roundabout almost immediately outside Holyrood Palace.
