Description
Schoolchildren sit at a large table in a classroom wearing matching overalls. Behind them is a fireplace and shelving. There are flowers in vases placed around the room and several pictures on the walls including on the left, an image of the Virgin Mother and Jesus. To the right is a window, in front of which hangs a large cage containing two birds.

This is a photograph from 'The Life History of a Slum Child' focusing on the community living in the Canongate. Accompanying text reads, "So the first lessons learned are not only the three R's, but also that there are such things as truth, honour, love, cleanness of speech and unselfishness of life - is that not infinitely worh while?"
St Saviours began in 1906 in Brown's Close and moved to Chessels Court in 1908. Diary of a Free Kindergarten by Lileen Hardy was published in 1912 and records daily life in the Kindergarten and can be read online via the
Library of Congress
. The images taken for the Diary of a Free Kindergarten were taken by
Francis Caird Inglis
and many are the same or very similar to those within this exhibition and taken from 'The Life History of a Slum Child'.
