Description
A group of women with babies and small children are talking in the street. Most of them are wearing woolen shawls and long white aprons and some hold their babies under their shawls to keep them warm. To the left of the picture, a boy crouches as he plays with one of the women amongst the assembled group.

This is a photograph from 'The Life History of a Slum Child' focusing on the community living in the Canongate. The Canongate is the section of Edinburgh's Royal Mile running from the junction with Jeffrey Street to a roundabout almost immediately outside Holyrood Palace.
