This is a photograph from 'The Life History of a Slum Child' focusing on the community living in the Canongate. The Canongate is the section of Edinburgh's Royal Mile running from the junction with Jeffrey Street to a roundabout almost immediately outside Holyrood Palace.
Accompanying text reads, "And their resting place - in the cool of the evening - is under the shadow of the old Cross of Canongate, before the old graveyard, which is the only green spot in the old romantic street - fitting rest for the tired bodies and fitting rest for the tired eyes - each have their story of Death.
