Crombie, Benjamin William
Biography
Benjamin William Crombie was an etcher lithographer and miniture portrait painter. He was born in 1803 in Fountainbridge, Edinburgh. He produced portraits and caricatures many of which dealt with those both professionally and criminally connected with the courts. In 1825 he published 'Portraits of Members of the Scottish Bench and Bar. Amongst those he illustrated from the other side of the dock was the infamous William Burke, taking his likeness on the day before his execution. He died in 1847.
