Mound in the snow

Description

A tall Christmas tree lit up with lights stands on the Mound, Edinburgh. The surrounding grass is covered with thick white snow. Wrought iron railings surround the snow-covered slope and streetlights are spread along its length. In the background stands New College with its two square towers. A car speeds up the Mound.

Construction of the Mound was begun in the 1760's by the tailor George Boyd to give him better access to his New Town clients from his Old Town shop. Large amounts of waste material from the development of New Town was added to 'Geordie Boyd's Mud Brig' creating a substantial link road. Further more formal development of the Mound begun in 1825 following the foundation of the Royal Institution at its foot.

New College is situated on Mound Place, just off the Mound in Edinburgh. It was designed by William Playfair and completed in 1850. It originally housed the Free Church College, and is part of a group of buildings constructed for the Free Church of Scotland in the mid 19th century. The building has , since 1935, been home to the University of Edinburgh's Faculty of Divinity.
