Title
The Oak Tree, Chapter 36 (Kashiwagi) from the series "A Modern Collection of Genji in Colour Prints" ("Ima Genji nishiki-e awase")
Description
In this print Mitsuuji (Genji) is depicted pulling a hidden note out from under a cushion. He is dressed in a purple kimono decorated with a band of flowers and red Chinese seals. His crest, which represents the auspicious 'crossed cloves', appears on his lapels and sleeves. He is holding a red circular fan and beside him stands a low screen decorated with red maple leaves and a river (River Tatsuta). A larger panelled folding screen, to the left, incorporates paintings of peonies and cherry blossom. In the adjoining room two women are using black and gold floral decorated lacquerware to prepare a bowl of warmed liquid. One of the women is dressed in a red kimono with a cherry blossom design and wears a garland of blue flowers in her hair. Beyond the room, through the open sliding doors, a veranda (engawa) with potted plants and an ornamental pond are visible.
This image derives from the serial novel or 'gokan', 'A Fake Murasaki and a Rustic Genji' (Nise Murasaki Inaka Genji) written by Ryutei Tanehiko and illustrated by Utagawa Kunisada (Toyokuni III), that was published between 1829-1842. This story reworks elements from the 'Tale of Genji' and transposes the action from the Heian period (794-1185) to the time of the Muromachi era's Onin Wars (1467-1477).

Kyoka poem
Murasaki Shikibu 'Tale of Genji', 'Kashiwagi', Chapter 36. In this chapter To no Chujo's son, Kashiwagi, is ill with depression and longs to die. Mountain ascetics and yin yang diviners are brought together to say prayers for Kashiwagi and to rid him of the malignant spirit that is said to be the cause of his illness. Kashiwagi contacts the Third Princess, Onna San no Miya, and tries to arrange a final meeting between the two of them. She is unwilling to have anything more to do with Kashiwagi and fears Genji's condemnation of their affair. Onna San no Miya gives birth to Kashiwagi's son. Genji fears for the Princess' health and sends for her father, the retired Emperor Suzaku. The Princess announces that she would like to become a nun, and in the presence of her father she receives the Precepts and has her hair cut. The retired Emperor is disappointed that Genji has not taken better care of Onna San no Miya and uses this new development as an excuse to try to remove her from Genji's household.
Genji's son, Yugiri, visits Kashiwagi on his deathbed. Before he dies, Kashigwagi confides in Yugiri, and explains that he has wronged Genji and wishes to seek his forgiveness. Genji reflects that the baby boy looks a lot like Kashiwagi and feels pity for Kashiwagi's parents. Genji criticizes Onna San no Miya for giving up her child in order to become a nun.
Yugiri repeatedly visits the home of Kashiwagi's widow, the Second Princess Ochiba, and is received by her mother, the Haven.
