Title
The Typhoon (Nowaki) Chapter 28 from the series "A Modern Collection of Genji in Colour Prints" ("Ima Genji nishiki-e awase")
Description
A young woman wearing a purple kimono patterned with a geometric design rushes forward to prevent a bamboo blind from being blown away by the wind. Behind her, seated on a red matt, is an elegantly dressed woman. She is recognisable from the previous chapters by her signature blue floral headdress and her chrysanthemum patterned kimono. This woman holds up her hands in surprise, and this gesture reveals how the woman's sleeves are fashionably long and drape over her hands. Next to her is a small black lacquer desk upon which have been placed several white volumes. The top volume bears an image of a golden bird.
This image derives from the serial novel or 'gokan', 'A Fake Murasaki and a Rustic Genji' (Nise Murasaki Inaka Genji) written by Ryutei Tanehiko and illustrated by Utagawa Kunisada (Toyokuni III), that was published between 1829-1842. This story reworks elements from the 'Tale of Genji' and transposes the action from the Heian period (794-1185) to the time of the Muromachi era's Onin Wars (1467-1477).

Kyoka poem
Murasaki Shikibu 'Tale of Genji', 'Nowaki', Chapter 28. In this chapter a tempest damages the gardens at the Rokujo estate. In the commotion caused by the tempest, Yugiri (Genji's son) catches a rare glimpse of Murasaki. This is the first time he has seen his father's wife and he is struck by her beauty. Genji has deliberately tried to keep Murasaki concealed from Yugiri to avoid any romantic complications. As the storm gets underway, Yugiri rushes to visit his grandmother (Her Highness) at Sanjo before returning to Rokujo the next day. Yugiri accompanies his father as he visits each of the women on the Rokujo estate and one by one Yugiri is given the opportunity to admire their unique qualities. The intimacy between Genji and Tamakazura puzzles and disturbs Yugiri as he still falsely believes that Tamakazura is Genji's daughter and his sister. When Yugiri returns to Sanjo he learns that Kumoi no Kari (Yugiri's love) has grown thin from pining for him.
