Title
The Tendril Wreath (Tamakazura) Chapter 22 from the series "A Modern Collection of Genji in Colour Prints" ("Ima Genji nishiki-e awase")
Description
A woman is shown holding a folded kimono with a colourful chrysanthemum pattern. She has just removed the kimono from a black lacquer chest in order to display the fabric for Mitsuuji (Genji) and his female companion to view. Mitsuuji points towards the kimono with a closed fan as he speaks to his kneeling companion.
Mitsuuji can be identified by his lobster tail topknot that is bound with a purple cord. He wears an elegant outer kimono with a blue bird motif upon a purple and white ground. His companion wears an elaborate floral headdress, and a lilac kimono patterned with a yellow chrysanthemum design.
The background colour consists of a subtle gradation from dark blue to sage green. This effect has been created using 'bokashizuri'. In the top left hand corner the branches of a tree are shown to be in bud.
This image derives from the serial novel or 'gokan', 'A Fake Murasaki and a Rustic Genji' (Nise Murasaki Inaka Genji) written by Ryutei Tanehiko and illustrated by Utagawa Kunisada (Toyokuni III), that was published between 1829-1842. This story reworks elements from the 'Tale of Genji' and transposes the action from the Heian period (794-1185) to the time of the Muromachi era's Onin Wars (1467-1477).

Kyoka poem
Murasaki Shikibu 'Tale of Genji', 'Tamakazura', Chapter 22. In this chapter Ukon (Murasaki's gentlewoman, formerly Yugao's gentlewoman) is instrumental in reuniting Genji with Yugao's daughter (Tamakazura) by To no Chujo. When the girl's guardian, (the Dazaifu Assistant) dies the Dazaifu Assistant's family bring Tamakazura to the city. By chance, while Tamakazura's small party is on a pilgrimage from Kyoto to Hasedera, they lodge at the same inn as Ukon. Ukon informs Genji that she has discovered Tamakazura, and Genji decides to adopt Tamakazura as his own and keep her identity a secret from To no Chujo. Genji moves Tamakazura into the Rokujo estate and arranges for her to share the northeast wing with Hanachirusato. He expresses his desire to make a fuss of Tamakazura and to tease her suitors. For the New Year celebrations Genji makes gifts of furnishings and fabric to Tamazakura's household and his closest female companions.
