Title
Wind in the Pines (Matsukaze) Chapter 18 from the series "A Modern Collection of Genji in Colour Prints" ("Ima Genji nishiki-e awase")
Description
In this image Mitsuuji (Genji) is shown in a bathhouse, crouching next to the wellhead that draws water from the river below. He is elegantly dressed in a purple kimono patterned with floral roundels. He holds a red round fan in one hand. To his left, stands a woman holding a young child. The child is dressed in a red kimono and also holds a small red fan. Behind them a curtain hung in a doorway bears a 'Genji mon', a design made from incense sticks that is associated with a specific chapter from the 'Tale of Genji'. A hot bath and a bamboo water bucket are visible in the background.

This image derives from the serial novel or 'gokan', 'A Fake Murasaki and a Rustic Genji' (Nise Murasaki Inaka Genji) written by Ryutei Tanehiko and illustrated by Utagawa Kunisada (Toyokuni III), that was published between 1829-1842. This story reworks elements from the 'Tale of Genji' and transposes the action from the Heian period (794-1185) to the time of the Muromachi era's Onin Wars (1467-1477).
