Title
The Picture Contest (Eawase) Chapter 17 from the series "A Modern Collection of Genji in Colour Prints" ("Ima Genji nishiki-e awase")
Description
A young girl with an elaborate floral headdress, dressed in a red kimono, is shown seated and reading from an illustrated book. Two volumes lie on the floor in front of her. Next to her is a large black lacquer chest decorated with a golden floral decoration. Mitsuuji (Genji) rests one arm upon the chest and leans towards the young girl. Mitsuuji wears a pink kimono patterned with crossed cloves and flowers. Behind them stands a wooden cupboard, also bearing a floral design. One of the cupboard's doors is open and reveals a stack of rolled picture scrolls. To the left stands a screen designed with a cutaway cloud shaped pattern.
This image derives from the serial novel or 'gokan', 'A Fake Murasaki and a Rustic Genji' (Nise Murasaki Inaka Genji) written by Ryutei Tanehiko and illustrated by Utagawa Kunisada (Toyokuni III), that was published between 1829-1842. This story reworks elements from the 'Tale of Genji' and transposes the action from the Heian period (794-1185) to the time of the Muromachi era's Onin Wars (1467-1477).

Kyoka poem
Murasaki Shikibu 'Tale of Genji', 'Eawase', Chapter 17. In this chapter Genji arranges a marriage between Akikonomu, the Ise Priestess, and Emperor Reizei. Because the retired Emperor Suzaku also favours the Ise Priestess, this arrangement has to be done discretely so as not to offend him. Genji feels slightly guilty at depriving him of Akikonomu.
To amuse Emperor Reizei a picture contest takes place. Genji's two picture scrolls of Suma and Akashi bring victory to the Plum Pavilion and Akikonomu faction.
Genji begins to consider retiring from court life in order to study the Buddhist scriptures.
