This replica of 'The Endeavour', built in Australia, toured British ports in 1997 and was in Leith from 24 May to 6 June.

Captain Cook circumnavigated the world twice. His first voyage, made in 'The Endeavour', a refitted Whitby coal ship, from 1768-1771, was intended to make astronomical observations from Tahiti, and secretly also to search for the existence of an Antarctic continent, but the expedition found New Zealand and the east coast of Australia instead, and completed a survey of the coastlines before returning to England. 'The Endeavour' was later used for cargo and then as troop transport in the American War of Independence. She was scuttled in Rhode Island in 1778. The wreck has not been precisely located.
