Annotation below title reads "The house on the right, No. 39, was the town house of Sir Walter Scott from 1798 to 1826."
Sir Walter Scott is one of Scotland's most celebrated novelists. He was born in Edinburgh in 1771, but spent much of his early childhood with relatives in the borders convalescing after a bout of polio. He returned to Edinburgh to attend the High School and eventually to study law at the University. His first novel, Waverley, was not published until 1814. Scott went on to release a large number of mostly historical novels until his death in 1832.
Castle Street and North Castle Street connect Princes Street to Queen Street and were constructed as part of James Craig's design for Edinburgh's New Town.
