Donaldson's College is situated on West Coates, close to Haymarket Station in Edinburgh. It was designed by W. H. Playfair and built between 1841 and 1851 with money bequeathed by the publisher Sir James Donaldson. The school was originally intended for the education of poor children with provision for deaf children as well, but the school focussed exclusively on the latter group from 1938 onwards. Donaldson's College moved to a new, purpose built premises in Linlithgow in January 2008. The original building was redeveloped into flats.
