The Royal High School building in Regent Road was designed by Thomas Hamilton and housed the school from 1829-1968. It replaced the High School of Edinburgh building which had been in what is now called Infirmary Street since 1578. When the school relocated to new premises in Barnton the building was converted for government use. If the 1979 Independence Referendum had returned a Yes vote, the old Royal High School was to be the home of the devolved Scottish Assembly. When the Scottish Parliament was established in 1997 a new building was erected at Holyrood. The (Old) Royal High School building now belongs to the City of Edinburgh Council. The Royal High School building has since been considered for a number of uses, including a national photography centre, music school and luxury hotel.
