Located in the parish of Cruden on a cliff top precipice, Slains Castle was originally the 16th century stone tower house of Bowness, and formerly known as 'the Bowness'. The building was destroyed by King James VI in 1594. Francis Hay, the 9th Earl of Errol returned from exile in 1597 and began rebuilding and extending the original tower house, renaming it 'New Slains'. Extensions were made in 1664 and again in 1836-37. The castle once housed important artefacts and a library of note.
