A castle stands on raised ground and is surrounded by tall trees. The building has high walls with castellated battlements at the top. It is approached by a narrow path that curves around the front of the building to a stepped entrance. In the bottom right of the picture is a simple plan of the building.

Item is dated 22 July 1833.
The site of Brodick Castle has been occupied some form of a stronghold since the 5th Century. The castle depicted here dates in part to the late 16th century. It was home to the Dukes of Hamilton until 1957 when it passed into the hands of the National Trust for Scotland in lieu of death duties. Since 1987, its image has appeared on the reverse side of £20 notes issued by the Royal Bank of Scotland.
