Kilchattan was named after a 6th century Bishop, Saint Cathan who founded a hermitage nearby in 539AD. It's main industry was fishing, until a corn mill was set-up in the 15th century and continued to run well into the 19th century. A lime kiln and quarry were set up during the 18th century and eventually developed into a brick and tile company, for which Kilchattan became famous.
