The drawing is dated to 13th April, 1801. The track, known as "Rest and be Thankful", has been in existence for centuries. It was first used for driving cattle to markets in the lowlands. The roads themselves were built under the recommendation of General George Wade after the Jacobite Uprisings of 1715 and 1719. They were constrcuted as military roads to connect various forts builts in the region. "Rest and be Thankful" comes from an inscription carved onto a stone marker at the top of the steep road, which commemorates the building of the military road by General Wade's regiment.
