The origins of Crookston Castle date back to the late twelfth century, when a Sir Robert de Croc built a wooden castle on top of a hill. The wooden castle was replaced by a stone one around 1400. A yew tree in the castle grounds is said to be the spot where Mary Queen of Scots agreed to marry Lord Darnley. In 1931 the castle became the first property to be acquired by the National Trust of Scotland. Today it is managed by Historic Environment Scotland.
