John Playfair, an etching and engraving by the artist William Nicholson
Description
A portrait of the mathematician and scientist, John Playfair (1748 - 1819), who sits in a three-quarter view looking out of the picture to the right (his right, the viewer's left). Beside him is a globe, and a small pile of books. His left arm rests on the arm of the chair he is sitting on; his right fades out of view. He wears small round-framed glasses, a coat cut to the waist, a waistcoat and necktie. Beside his left elbow are William Nicholson's initials and the date 1819.
