Description
A buckie wife sits on the Canongate, Edinburgh with two young children. She is wearing a headscarf and has baskets laid out in front of her displaying her wares. A barefooted boy and a younger child look on. Across the street are the shops including Taylor's Boot Warehouse, J. Campbell butchers and Macdonald's Commercial Hotel. In front of the shops stand a horse and carriage and another street vendor with a cart.

So-called 'Buckie Wives' were street vendors of seafood. They sold both 'Buckies', or whelks, and mussels.
The Canongate is the section of Edinburgh's Royal Mile running from the junction with Jeffrey Street to a roundabout almost immediately outside Holyrood Palace.
