The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland was founded in 1909 by Edinburgh lawyer Thomas Hailing Gillespie. The 85 acre site in Corstorphine was purchased in 1913 by the Society and Edinburgh Town Council. This site is still home to Edinburgh Zoo. The Zoo was opened to the public on 22 July 1913. It currently houses some 1000 animals. Edinburgh Zoo is embarking on an ambitious development plan lasting roughly 20 years at a projected cost of 85 million pounds.
