Southannan is built a short way away from the ruins of Southannan Castle, a former seat of the Semphill family. Originally Underbank House, it was remodelled to become Southannan for Captain and Lady Sophia Montgomerie. The earliest part of the house is thought to date from the late 18th or early 19th century with the rest circa 1840-60. The house has now been converted into flats.
