The accompanying descriptive text in the volume begins as follows:
'The mansion of Wallhouse, the residence of Andrew Gillon, Esq., is situated in the parish and near to the village of Torphichen, so intimately connected with the history of the Knights of St John. Its original name was "The Well House," from numerous fine springs in the neighbourhood. The house is in the castellated style of architecture, and includes a square tower of considerable elevation. It originally consisted of a centre block, bounded by two small castellated towers. The wings and the large tower were added in 1855, from the plans of the late Mr Maitland Wardrop of Brown and Wardrop, Architects, Edinburgh.'
The full text may be viewed from the volume which is held at the Edinburgh and Scottish Collection in Edinburgh Central Library.
Wallhouse is now a Children's Home owned by West Lothian Council.
