The accompanying descriptive text in the volume begins as follows:
'This mansion, the residence of Sir Robert Keith Alexander Dick Cunyngham, Bart., is situated in the parish of Duddingston, and is so close to Edinburgh that the entrance lodge is in the immediate neighbourhood of its south eastern suburbs. It stands among some ancient trees, and to the north the bold face of Arthur's Seat adds greatly to the beauty of its surroundings. The present mansion was built on the site of the old house formerly called Preistfield, which on the 11th January 1681 was burned down by the students of the College of Edinburgh, during a period of great excitement against Popery.'
The full text may be viewed from the volume which is held at the Edinburgh and Scottish Collection in Edinburgh Central Library.
Prestonfield House is now a 5 star hotel and restaurant.
