The accompanying descriptive text in the volume begins as follows:
'This mansion, the residence of Sir William Baillie, Bart., is situated in the parish of Whitburn, West Lothian. It is a large house in the old Scottish style of architecture.
Like many of the Scottish mansions, the older part of it dates from an early period, and it is known to have been in existence prior to the year 1620. It had been enlarged at various times, but in 1822 a very large addition was made by the late Sir William Baillie. Various improvements have since been made by the present proprietor, and in 1878 the house was put in excellent order.'
The full text may be viewed from the volume which is held at the Edinburgh and Scottish Collection in Edinburgh Central Library.
Polkemmet House was demolished in the 1960s. The estate was bought by West Lothian District Council in 1978, and the country park was opened to the public in 1981. The park covers 169 hectares (420 acres), and is managed by West Lothian Council.
