The accompanying descriptive text in the volume begins as follows:
'This mansion, the residence of Walter Wingate Gray, Esq., is situated in the parish of Garvald, East Lothian, and stands within a short distance of the village of that name.
Before the reformation the house, as its name indicates, was a nunnery, an appanage of the Abbey of Haddington. It was a strong building with massive walls, having narrow slits for windows.'
The full text may be viewed from the volume which is held at the Edinburgh and Scottish Collection in Edinburgh Central Library.
Nunraw bought by the Cistercian Monks in 1946 who built Sancta Maria Abbey.
