The accompanying descriptive text in the volume begins as follows:
'This interesting mansion, the property of Charles Dalrymple, Esq., is situated in the parish of Inveresk, and is close to the village of Fisherrow, near Musselburgh. It was built by Sir James Dalrymple, Bart., a grandson of the first Earl of Stair. He was Auditor of Exchequer, and member of Parliament for Haddington Burghs in the last century. He was also proprietor of the estate of Hailes, near Haddington, and being anxious to have residence nearer Edinburgh, he in 1729 proposed to feu the common myre of Fisherrow, with a view to enclosing it as a park, but the magistrates did not consent till 1743.
New Hailes House when finished was named after his East Lothian estate, and "it was" says Dr Carlyle of Inveresk, "one of the first houses whose park was laid out and adorned with all the elegance of modern taste"'.
The full text may be viewed from the volume which is held at the Edinburgh and Scottish Collection in Edinburgh Central Library.
Newhailes is occupied and maintained by The National Trust of Scotland.
