The accompanying descriptive text in the volume begins as follows:
'This mansion, the seat of Walter James Little Gilmour, Esq., is situated in the parish of Liberton, close to the southern suburb of Edinburgh.
It is a house of considerable antiquity, and from a date on it seems to have been built in 1617. The word Inch signifies island, and the house was so named as it was in former times encompassed by water, and the entry to it was by a drawbridge. In 1760, after a great fall of rain, the grounds around the house were covered with water, and access to it was obstructed. About the beginning of the present century an addition was made to the house, when several old carved and lettered stones were inserted which had formed part of the town-house of the Little family in Libberton's Wynd. This house was removed for the construction of George IV Bridge.'
The full text may be viewed from the volume which is held at the Edinburgh and Scottish Collection in Edinburgh Central Library.
Inch House is now a Community Education Centre owned by the City of Edinburgh Council.
