The accompanying descriptive text in the volume begins as follows:
'Houston House, the residence of Thomas Shairp, Esq., is situated in the parish of Uphall, Linlithgowshire.
It is an old Scottish mansion house, dating from the latter part of the sixteenth century, and is a building of considerable height, having crow stepped gables. It stands in well laid out grounds.'

Houston House is now a hotel.
