The accompanying descriptive text in the volume begins as follows:
'This princely mansion, the residence of the Right Hon. the Earl of Hopetoun, is situated in the parish of Abercorn, Linlithgowshire. It stands on a beautiful terrace overlooking the estuary of the Forth, three miles from South Queensferry, and twelve from Edinburgh. The building was commenced in 1696 by the first Earl of Hopetoun, after plans by the celebrated architect Sir William Bruce, and many years afterwards was finished under the care of William Adam.'
The full text may be viewed from the volume which is held at the Edinburgh and Scottish Collection in Edinburgh Central Library.
Hopetoun House is the home of the 4th Marquess of Linlithgow.
