The accompanying descriptive text in the volume begins as follows:
'This mansion, a seat of His Grace the Duke of Abercorn, is situated in the parish of Duddingstone [sic], a short distance from Edinburgh. The house is a beautiful specimen of Grecian architecture, and was built in 1768 by James, the eighth Earl of Abercorn, after a design by the well known architect Sir William Chambers. The pleasure grounds which surround it were also planned with great taste, and with the house, cost the large sum of £30,000.'
