The accompanying descriptive text in the volume begins as follows:
'This mansion, a seat of the Right Hon. the Earl of Rosebery, is situated in the parish of that name, in the county of Midlothian. Dalmeny was originally spelt Dumanie, and signified in Gaelic the black heath, of which probably a great portion of its higher grounds at one time consisted. It is one of the most beautifully situated houses in the lowlands of Scotland. It was erected about the beginning of the present century by Archibald John Primrose, fourth Earl of Rosebery, from the designs and under the superintendence of William Wilkins, architect.'
The full text may be viewed from the volume which is held at the Edinburgh and Scottish Collection, Central Library, Edinburgh.
Dalmeny House is still home to the Rosebery family.
