The accompanying descriptive text in the volume begins as follows:
'The mansion of Dalmahoy, the residence of the Right Hon. The earl of Morton, is situated in the parish of Ratho, about eight miles from Edinburgh. The older part of it was built in the early part of the last century, and it has been subsequently much enlarged. It stands in a park of 500 acres, and in the plantations are some large trees. The rugged crags of Dalmahoy form a marked feature in the surrounding scenery.'
