The accompanying descriptive text in the volume begins as follows:
'This mansion, the residence of John Cornelius Halkett Esq., is situated in the parish of the same name, and stands on a rising ground above the sea. It is surrounded by trees, remarkable for their size and beauty. The house was originally built about 1680, but in 1772 considerable additions were made to it by Sir Adam Inglis and his brother Sir John greatly improved the whole place. Sir John's daughter and heiress, Lady Torphicen, added a new front to the house. It was occupied for some months, several years ago, by the late duchess of Kent, Her Majesty's mother.'
