The accompanying descriptive text in the volume begins as follows:
'This mansion, a residence of Sir James Ramsay Gibson Maitland Bart., is situated in the parish of Kirkliston, near the village of Clifton Hall, about eight miles from Edinburgh.
It is a house in the Scottish baronial style of architecture, and stands in a beautiful part of the county of Midlothian.
In its neighbourhood have been found several interesting antiquities, among which were cinerary urns, and gold and silver coins. In 1819 when making cuttings for the Union Canal which passes through the estate, the tusk of a mammoth, in good preservation, nearly five feet long, was found about twenty-four feet under the surface of the ground.'
