The accompanying descriptive text in the volume begins as follows:
'This mansion, the property of his Grace the Duke of Buccleuch, was at one time one of the largest houses in the three Lothians, and was formerly called Roystoun. It is in the form of an oblong square enclosing a court, and measures about 117 feet in length on the east and west sides, which are irregularly built and not similar to each other. The south front, the most ornamented and regular of the whole, is 90 feet long.'

Caroline Park is still privately owned.
