The accompanying descriptive text in the volume begins as follows:
'This interesting mansion, in the castellated style of architecture, is the residence of Mrs W. B. Hodgson, and is situated in the parish of Colinton, a few miles to the west of Edinburgh. From its many associations with men of learning, it is one of the best known objects in the district. It is surrounded by about 27 acres, the greater part being laid out as pleasure grounds, in which there are about four miles of walks.'
Bonaly Tower is now self contained flats.
