Newington is a residential area in the 'South Side' of Edinburgh, bordered by the Grange to the west and Prestonfield to the east. The area gained popularity as a pleasant, rural residential location from the late 18th century onwards. Considerable development took place in the first quarter of the 19th century following Dr Benjamin Bell's acquisition of the estate and the construction of his home, Newington House, in 1805.
