Jenny Ha's Change House or tavern was founded in 1749 and owned by Mrs Janet Hall. It became well known as a meeting place for writers such as Allan Ramsay and John Gay (author of The Beggar's Opera). The original site of the tavern is now occupied by Whitefoord House, a Scottish veteran's residence, although a public house continued to operate from the Canongate under the Jenny Ha's name until recently.
