Victoria Terrace from the west

Description

A double image of the curved Victoria Terrace, Edinburgh. The terrace is lined with an assortment of shops and buildings mostly in the Scottish Baronial style. The end of the terrace is marked by a covered arcade. The edge is lined with wrought iron railings. George IV Bridge can be seen at the end of the street.

This image has been chosen for the Edinburgh - Past and Present Exhibition by Professor Charles McKean, University of Dundee - "This confident view of the levels of modernised Edinburgh indicates the scale of engineering required to replace the old Upper Bow and construct the new George IV Bridge. You can just make out the chimneys of the Cowgate below it. The arcaded terrace (itself a homage to old Edinburgh) on the left remains incomplete, since at that date, it provided the only access through to Riddle's Court which was then inaccessible to the Lawnmarket" Charles McKean.

This is a glass negative from the Thomas Begbie Cavaye Collection which is held by City of Edinburgh Museums and Galleries.

Victoria Street and Terrace were constructed between 1829 and 1834 to link the Grassmarket to George IV Bridge, also built at this time. The street cut through the pre-existing West Bow, joining its lower section for the final descent to the Grassmarket and blocking through traffic to its upper section leading to the Lawnmarket.
