Description

A double view of the shore at Leith, Edinburgh with a sailing ship and a paddle steamer. The sailing ship has two masts and its rigging and sails can be seen. The paddle steamer has a tall funnel and paddle wheels on each side. The shore is lined with buildings which include housing and a hotel. A wagon can be seen in front of the hotel.

This is a glass negative from the Thomas Begbie Cavaye Collection which is held by City of Edinburgh Museums and Galleries.

Leith is situated in the north of Edinburgh where the Water of Leith joins the Firth of Forth. It has acted as Edinburgh's maritime connection for many centuries, and continues to be one of the UK's busiest ports. It was incorporated into Edinburgh in 1920 having previously been a separate burgh. It is now home to the Scottish Executive's main offices, Edinburgh's Sikh temple, the Royal Yacht Britannia and Ocean Terminal, a large shopping and entertainment complex.
