Old Cherry

Old Cherry knows the road to take
For any journey you might make,
whether for worship, work or play.
Rely on him; he knows the way.

For forty years, in his old brake
he's worked this city night and day;
He knows each corner, bend and brae.
He'll do his best to get you there,
no matter how great or small the fare.
His duty's done for duty's sake.

Yet time moves on; his old bones ache;
so quickly now he seems to tire.
He can no longer ply for hire
and so, although his heart might break
Old Cherry knows the road to take.

Edward Holt was an Edinburgh caricaturist and figure painter working in the second half of the nineteenth century. This bound volume contains a large proportion of his surviving work.
There is a little uncertainty over Edward Holt's name. He is sometimes referred to as Edmund and was more commonly known as Ned.
