The 'South Side', whilst not precisely defined, usually refers to an area comprising St Leonards, South Clerk Street, Sciennes, Causewayside, Newington and the Grange. These areas expanded throughout the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries due to migration from Edinburgh's overcrowded Old Town. Urbanisation of these areas was slower, and not so methodically planned as the formation of New Town to the north. The University of Edinburgh's main campus and the Royal Commonwealth Pool are both located in the South Side.
