'Land' is an older word for 'tenement'. It is used to refer to several of the multi-storey buildings in Edinburgh's Old Town such as Gladstone's Land.
The Cowgate runs from its junction with St Mary's Street (formerly St Mary's Wynd) and the Pleasance to the Grassmarket. It was the route by which cattle were driven into town from outside Edinburgh. The Cowgate Port was a gateway through the Flodden wall (City Wall).
High School Wynd is a short street linking Infirmary Street with the Cowgate. Edinburgh High School was built on what is now called Infirmary Street in 1578. The School moved to Regent Road in 1829, and stayed in those grand premises until moving to Barnton in 1969.
